ICD arrests SAPS warrant officer for corruption and extortion: Bramley CAS 03/09/2010

Investigators from the Independent Complaints Directorate (ICD) Anti Corruption Command unit arrested a Bramley SAPS stationed Warrant Officer Thinandavha Magidi. The policeman was arrested and charged with corruption and extortion on 1 September 2010.

On 29 August 2010, Thembinkosi Sithole of Alexandra Township approached the ICD to lodge a complaint against Warrant Officer Magadi. He alleged that Magadi tried to solicit a bribe of R1000 00. The warrant officer would in return hand back Sithole’s firearm which was confiscated in 2007 after he was arrested by the police in a robbery matter. The gun was stored in a safe at Bramley police station. The complainant had been trying without success to get back his firearm from the cops after he was acquitted on the robbery case.

Based on the information provided by the complainant, an entrapment was conducted on 01 September 2010 at Bramley SAPS premises. The complainant was given the R1000-00 which he was to give to the warrant officer. The ICD investigators pounced on the Officer immediately after he had accepted the bribe money.

The money was found in his possession and he was arrested and charged with extortion and corruption. He was detained at Alexandra SAPS. He appeared at the Alexandra Magistrates Court today, 2 September 2010 and was granted bail of R2000-00. The case was postponed until 9 September 2010.
