Various recreation centres from across Gauteng will be hosting this year's July holiday programme from 29 June to 17 July. A large number of young people from around the province are expected to participate in a variety of sporting codes and indigenous games including football, cricket, rugby, swimming, diketo and morabaraba.
Scheduling to start from 09h00 to 15h00 daily, the programme is centred on engaging youth from Gauteng schools during the July school holidays. The Holiday Programme concept is an initiative by the Gauteng Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation aimed at taking young people away from streets, promoting healthy lifestyle amongst the youth and also enhancing mass participation in sports amongst communities in Gauteng.
"The programme will make it possible for youth to take part in sporting activities and even assist them in learning new sporting codes while enjoying their break from school. It will also serve to complement the department's efforts to create a culture of choosing sport over other socially unacceptable acts, such as crime. This year we hope to draw more interest from the youth across races," said MEC for Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation Nelisiwe Mbata-Mtimkhulu.
The Meadowlands Hub holiday programme, to be held at the Ikhwezi Recreational Centre, is one of the fifty similar programmes organised by the department during the July holidays.
