The department has asked all contractors working on Human Settlements Projects in the province to work during December holidays in an effort to build more homes with access to water and sanitation for poor people in the province.
The department plans to build 18 900 houses with access to basic services such as water and sanitation. From April to the end of September this year, 5019 houses had been built, VIP toilets erected, 2586 defective houses rectified and 4 215 sites serviced. 115 qualifying beneficiaries have been approved on the Finance Linked Individual subsidy programme where people are granted subsidy by government through National Housing Finance Corporation to buy their first homes.
The subsidy amount starts from R10 000 to R87 000, given free to all qualifying beneficiaries who wouldn’t qualify for any home loans.
The department has also handed a multi-purpose community centre built at R2.5 million in Elliot dale, Ntsingizi Village, a school library in Zintonga village donated by everite.
