Housing on wheels to help rural people access housing subsidies

The department has allocated R1,812 367 million for consumer education by introducing the Housing On Wheels project aimed at helping rural people access housing subsidies in the province.

Housing On Wheels will also raise public awareness on housing programmes, products and services in various areas of the province.

The truck will have services geared towards assisting people with housing problems or those who want to apply includinghousing subsidy system, registration of veterans, beneficiary workshops, information stalls manned by officials from the department. Municipalities and individuals will also be able to check status of their applications for housing projects and subsidies on the truck.

The Housing On Wheels project is pilot project that will run in three phases during the current financial year. It will start in Tarkastad, Matatiele, Bizana, Grahamstown, Soweto On Sea, Tsomo and Duncan Village in July. The next trip will be in October and it will finish in February next year. Already 40 consumer education practitioners are employed and placed in all districts to assist people access housing subsidies, particularly in rural parts of the province.
