The department reiterates its confidence that the target of completing twenty two thousand (22 000) homes by the end of financial year will be met regardless of challanges confronting the department. Those challenges have been identified and timely interventions effected to ensure the targets are met.
In the half year report, the department completed 3 395 homes with 15 381 at various stages (70%) of construction. Of these 15 381 houses, 2 514 are at foundation level, 2 454 are at wall plate, 5 062 are at roof level and 4 351 are at finishing stages ( structure built, but awaiting final checks of snags or defects before handover to beneficiaries).
Half year report is an ongoing assessment of programme performance against the predetermined targets encapsulated in the Departments Strategic and Operational Plan for the 2010/11 financial year reflecting the department’s performance for the period April to September 2010. It gives the department an opportunity to make progress assessment and effect the necessary interventions to meet the desired targets.
The department has made necessary interventions by setting a target of 3,700 homes to be completed monthly until the end of financial year, asked contractors to increase working period including on Holidays.
The department is also fast tracking the appointment of retired civil engineers, land and Quantity surveyors, town planners, Geo Scientists and other built environment professionals who will mentor and provide hands on support to departmental professionals and technical personnel working on human settlements projects in the province.
The retired professionals will be placed on various housing projects that are located at the various districts within the province. With these timely interventions, the department is on track to deliver the promise of 22 000 housing units in the province.
