North West MEC for Human Settlements, Public Safety& Liaison, Ms Desbo Mohono and the Mayor of Moses Kotane Local Municipality, Cllr Fetsang Mokate-Thebe are to lead a team of volunteers mobilised to render active community service at a rural housing development project site as part of celebrating former President Nelson Mandela’s 93rd birthday and 67 years of community service. The team is to cast foundations for the project in Seolong village outside Rustenburg in the North West Province as from 9:00 am on Monday 18 July 2011.
The joint programme of the Provincial Department of Human Settlements, Public Safety & Liaison and Moses Kotane Local Municipality supports the “Take Action! Inspire Change! Campaign initiated by the Nelson Mandela Foundation supported by South African government and the United Nations. It involves casting of 50 foundations for the multi-million project meant to alleviate the housing needs of the poor, aged and unemployed in the village most of whom live in mud houses.
MEC Mohono says that Mandela Day challenges and presents her department with an opportunity to reach out to the destitute and to the vulnerable to reassure them that government cares and will intensify its effort to create vibrant and sustainable human settlements that are in safe and secure environments.
“It’s our way of supporting the global movement to honour Madiba’s contribution and commitment to carry forward his legacy of humility and selflessness that he espoused and personified in pursuit of equality, unity and better life for all,” says Mohono.
The departmental programme for the day includes de-bushing of a crime hotspot that also obstructs the view of motorists approaching the Lichtenburg-Bophelong (Mafikeng Provincial Hospital) junction at Danville on the outskirts of Mahikeng.
