Correctional Services stopped a hostage drama involving six officials within one hour at the Kimberley Corrections Centre today. The drama started when an estimated 78 offenders set some mattresses alight at 12:30. Fire brigades were called in to extinguish the fire and the South African Police Service (SAPS) to assist. No one was injured and two officials and a few offenders were treated for smoke inhalation. Officials were treated for trauma. The Department is assessing the extent of damages.
