Fifteen people were fatally wounded following a head on collision between a bakkie and a bus on the R510 between Northem and Rustenburg near Sunfontein village at about 12h00 on Sunday.
According to traffic authorities the bakkie was overtaking when it collided head-on with a bus. All people in the bakkie died on the scene while an unconfirmed number of passengers in the bus was taken to the local hospitals.
The road linking Limpopo and North West was then closed for two hours, while motorists were directed to an alternative road passing through the village.
Officials at the scene confirm that 10 males, two females and three children aged between 8 and 12 were traveling in a bakkie heading towards the Rustenburg direction while the bus was heading towards Northam in Limpopo.
The North West MEC for Human Settlements Public Safety and Liaison called on motorist to be extra careful on provincial roads and drive at a required speed limit. Maloyi said that motorists should also overtake when it’s safe to do so.
