Ninety-seven year old Mthuthuzeli Mweli of Leeuwdoringstadt went home happier with government’s effort to improve access for people living with disabilities. Mweli was among the three people who received brand new wheelchairs from North West Premier, Mme Thandi Modise at the conclusion of North West Provincial Executive Council‘s Public Participation Programme held at Oesonskraal outside Wolmaranstadt on Wednesday.
In a frank acknowledgement that not much has been achieved in advancing the interests of people living with disabilities, Premier Mme Modise said a lot still needs to be done by provincial government departments and municipalities towards improving employment of people living with disabilities.
She urged departments and municipalities not to do things for people with disabilities without consulting with them in line with respecting Disabled People South Africa’s motto of “Nothing for us, without us”.
