Home Affairs rolls out smart ID cards to youths and pensioners

Mass roll-out of smart ID cards to youths and pensioners from Saturday, 1 February 2014

Saturday, 1 February 2014, marks the first day of the mass roll-out of the Smart ID cards by the Department of Home Affairs to 16 year-old youths and pensioners who are 60 years and above in the 28 earmarked departmental offices across the country.

In this regard, Home Affairs calls upon those who are 16 years and above first time applicants to approach the 28 home affairs offices to apply every month from now henceforth for the smart ID cards. In the same breadth we make a clarion call to pensioners who were born during the month of January and February to approach the 28 home affairs offices to apply for the smart ID card.

With effect from March this year, pensioners who are 60 years and above can start applying for the smart ID cards in accordance with their dates of birth. All other citizens are called upon to await invitations to apply.

The roll-out of the smart ID cards to all eligible South Africans will take a few years and the department accordingly makes an appeal for the public to exercise patience. The Smart ID card is one of the major achievements of the 20 years of our democracy and remains part of government efforts to consolidate the restoration of citizenship, identity and dignity to all South Africans.

At this stage, applications for the Smart ID card can only be made at the following offices:
