All Home Affairs offices across the country will be open to provide services to members of the public who require documents to enable them to participate in the local government elections scheduled for Wednesday, 18 May 2011.
In this regard, and as per directives of Minister Dr Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma all Home Affairs offices will open from 07h00 to 19h00 to coincide with officially declared Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) voting times.
Critical, however, is the need for the Department of Home Affairs to ensure those wishing to participate and exercise their democratic right to vote, do so without any hindrance in respect of the issuance of identity documents (IDs).
Accordingly, the department has increased its printing capacity through Government Printing Works to meet the increased demand for IDs which resulted in the department being able to issue about 228 650 IDs in a month. These IDs are being delivered to all offices of application on a daily basis.
The department is also rolling out mobile units to those areas where the department does not have a physical presence. The mobile units are fitted with the capacity to issue temporary identity certificates for those without permanent IDs.
The department has also established an operational centre at its Headquarters in Pretoria, led by the Director-General Mkuseli Apleni, which will constantly update Minister Dlamini Zuma, to oversee the operations of the department throughout the day of local government elections.
