Home Affairs Portfolio Committee Welcomes Special Dispensation

The Portfolio Committee on Home Affairs welcomes the announcement on the creation of a new Zimbabwean Special Dispensation of 2014 for Zimbabwean nationals in South Africa by the Minister of Home Affairs. This will allay fears of the unknown future regarding the impending expiry of the Dispensation of Zimbabwean Project of 2009.

The committee views this process as important in ensuring that Zimbabwean nationals are documented and have a legal standing in the country. The Committee is of the view that this process is also in line with the provisions of Southern African Development Community’s (SADC’s) Protocol on Facilitation of the Movement of Persons of 2005.

The committee further welcomes the department’s move to implement the new programme as stated. The committee urges all Zimbabwean nationals to heed the department’s call to re-register and adhere to the set deadline. The committee is also encouraged by the department’s assurance that the process has been designed in a way that promotes efficiency and eliminates long queues which were experienced in the past.

The committee will monitor the implementation of the new programme and will in due course engage the department to assess the progress of the registration drive.
