Home Affairs official suspended over alleged assault

The Department of Home Affairs today Tuesday, 10 April 2012 suspended an official at the Marastad Refugee Reception Satellite Office at the Pretoria Showgrounds for allegedly assaulting a foreign national who was awaiting service from our officials.

According to reports, large volumes of foreign nationals visited both the Marabastad and its Pretoria Showgrounds Satellite Offices to apply for permits that would allow them to reside legally in the country.

Management had made arrangements that women and the disabled should be served first. This resulted in some of the men who were awaiting serives to become agitated and force themselves to the front of the queue so they could be assisted. When the security official attempted to restrain the crowd, it resulted in him allegedly assaulting one of the foreign nationals.

Upon receipt of the complaint the department served the official implicated in the assault with an order of suspension pending an investigation and disciplinary processes

The department reiterates its commitment to rendering services efficiently, effectively and in a caring and humane manner.
