Minister of Home Affairs Dr Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma will tomorrow Monday, 16 May 2011 cast a special vote at 08h00am at the Newlands Clinic (corner Kildare and Main Streets) in Newlands, Cape Town ahead of Local Government Elections on 18 May 2011.
This will enable Minister Dlamini Zuma to execise oversight and monitor department operations on the day of elections, as South Africans go to the polls to exercise their democratic right to elect a government of their choice.
It is also in line with the department’s constitutional mandate to support the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) to deliver free, fair and credible democratic elections.
With a view to ensuring that all registered South Africans have enabling documents to allow them to cast their votes, Minister Dlamini Zuma will also on Monday, 16 May 2011 visit Gugulethu and Masiphumele in Houtbay to deliver IDs to people whose IDs were destroyed as result of natural disasters and fire.
Deputy Minister Chohan and other officials in the department will also deliver IDs to those affected by natural disasters in the communities of Khayelitsha, Cape Winelands, and the Hillside informal settlement in Grabouw.
With a view to ensuring all South Africans have IDs, the department will on Wednesday, 18 May 2011 be implementing a comprehensive plan to ensure it supports the IEC to discharge its mandate of delivering free, fair and credible local government elections.
Minister Dlamini Zuma, Deputy Minister Chohan and indeed the management of the department, joins President Zuma and the government of the country in encouraging all people to exercise their right to vote on Wednesday, 18 May 2011. This fundamental right remains the cornerstone of any vibrant democracy.
