Home Affairs Minister Dr Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma concludes visit to Berlin, Germany

Home Affairs Minister Dr Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma will later today Thursday 3 November 2011 conclude her three day official visit scheduled from Tuesday-Thursday 1 to 3 November 2011.

Minister Dlamini Zuma’s visit to Berlin comes within the context of the Department’s committment to re-engineer the department of Home Affairs as a security department and therefore its commitment to ensure the security and integrity of these documents as well as their efficient production.

In this regard, German State Secretary at the Federal Ministry of the Interior Dr Ole Schröder in discussions with Minister Dlamini Zuma on Tuesday 1 November 2011 shared the German experience of producing an electronic passport and e-identity card.

Minister Dlamini Zuma and her delegation of senior officials also visited the German Bundesdruckerei (Government Printing Works) to share experiences in the printing of enabling documents such as ID’s, passports, birth, death and marriage certificates for citizens.

While in Germany, Minister Dlamini Zuma delivered a keynote address at Berlin’s oldest university, Humboldt University on the role and achievements of South African women particularly in politics and science on Wednesday 2 November 2011.

Humboldt University also during the evening’s proceedings honoured the second winner of the Caroline von Humboldt award in research, Constanza Toninelli. Ms Toninelli who currently holds a PhD degree in Physics will pursue the following topic of study: “Organic Molecules in Disordered Photonic Structures: from co-operative effects in mesoscopic ensembles to a random quantum network.”
