The Department of Home Affairs today, Thursday, 17 March 2011 implemented contingency measures to ensure the uninterrupted delivery of services to South Africans following a power outage in the Waltloo area in Pretoria, occasioned the theft of a power cable close to its head office.
Working together with the Department of Public Works, the Department has secured a generator that is able to provide enough power to meet 90% of the Department’s daily operational requirements.
This has been necessitated by the theft of an Eskom power cable in the Waltloo area, which is in close proximity to the Department’s head office, as a result of which information technology (IT) operations in offices around the country have been interrupted throughout the week. As a consequence of this outage, online verification required for the issuance of, amongst others, passports and identity documents (IDs) was interrupted. Services were therefore rendered at a slower pace than usual.
The Department, in an effort to meet its commitment to offer excellent service delivery to the country’s citizens, sought measures that would alleviate the conditions which were experienced throughout the country.
The Department is now convinced that service delivery will be rendered at optimal levels to ensure that the needs of South Africans can be met.
