The Department of Home Affairs will intensify its efforts to eradicate the more than 29 000 duplicate identity documents (IDs) in the week ahead, with the publication of the names of those affected, in more national newspapers.
This comes within the context of the launch of the campaign by Home Affairs Minister Dr Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma on Friday, 11 May 2012, aimed at dealing a decisive blow against the scourge of duplicate IDs which has brought grief and pain to thousands of South Africans.
In this context, Minister Dlamini Zuma reiterates her appeal to all those whose names appear on the website and in media to approach their nearest Home Affairs offices to have their cases resolved.
To further enable the speedy and efficient resolution of such duplicate cases all our offices have established dedicated counters and personnel at which South Africans will be assisted.
The Department has also activated its sms service to enable South Africans to check their ID status. SMS the letter D followed by your ID number to 32551. The ID number will be verified and sent back to you via return sms.
We will also be building strategic partnerships with relevant organisations to mobilise those affected by duplicate IDs behind this campaign so that they too can, together with their fellow South Africans, enjoy the benefits of a better life for all.
