Holiday programme a milestone to youth development

Scores of young people continue, in their numbers, to participate in the Gauteng Integrated School Holiday programme currently underway in recreation centres across the province. Coinciding with 2010 FIFA World Cup, the programme will run until 9 July and youngsters who enrol get to participate in sporting activities; excursions and arts and crafts classes.

Hosted by the Gauteng Provincial Government the programme is aimed at ensuring that Gauteng’s youth stay safe; stay entertained and gain knowledge during their six week vacation period.

During a visit to the Bekkersdal Recreation Centre, Gauteng officials were happy to learn the high numbers of young people participating in the programme. According to MEC for Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation Ms Nelisiwe Moerane, “this programme aims to ensure young people participate in constructive activities during their school holidays whilst at the same time have an opportunity to learn different sporting codes and also engage in arts and culture activities.”

Bekkersdal Recreation Centre is one of more than 240 sites including schools and community hubs across Gauteng where the programme is being rolled out. The initiative is targeted at all the grades. Emmanuel Mahesu an activity coordinator at the Bekkersdal Recreation Centre said that the programme is a success because of close cooperation between the provincial government, local sports federations as well as the positive response from the community.
