Higher Education Minister congratulates the Class of 2011

The Department of Higher Education and Training wishes to congratulate the Class of 2011 who have passed their National Senior Certificate (NSC) examinations and the Department of Basic Education on its achievement of a national pass rate of 70,2% noting an increase of 2,4% on the previous year.

For those who have not performed as well as expected, the Department urges them not to lose hope, as learning is a life-long experience with various options within the post school systems.

“Our further education and training (FET) colleges are institutions ideally suited for those wishing to make up their “matric” and for those wishing to study subjects that will lead to a vocational career path. There are 50 FET colleges with 264 campuses all over the country which offer a range of programmes that cater for most students’ needs and interest ranging from Engineering, Business Studies, Art, Music to Food Services,” Minister for Higher Education and Training, Dr Blade Nzimande said.

The 23 universities in the country will provide access to approximately 180 000 new entrants in 2012 for those wishing to pursue their studies in the fields of business and management; science, engineering and technology; humanities and education.

“Those who wish to enter the world of work or need to increase their skills capabilities, can consider the options of learnerships, apprenticeships and skills programmes through one the 21 sector education and training authorities (SETAs) which cover each economic sector in the country,” said Dr Nzimande.

The Department of Higher Education and Training welcomes the Class of 2011 into the post school education and training system where learning and growth can take place in South Africa at universities, comprehensive universities, universities of technology, public further education and training colleges and sector education and training authorities.
