Higher Education Committee calls for more robust stakeholder engagement

The Portfolio Committee on Higher Education and Training has welcomed a briefing by the Financial and Fiscal Commission (FFC) on its 2012 recommendations for higher education institutions.

“The Committee welcomes the meaningful engagements among stakeholders in the higher education sector, particularly as this presentation that related to the changing of the funding formula so that we could have a scientifically valid method by which all institutions could be assessed for purposes of budgeting”, says Committee Chairperson, Adv Ishmael Malale.

The Committee is of the view that the proposed change of the funding formula will promote efficiency and quality education in the sector without downplaying the limitations experienced by many historically disadvantaged tertiary institutions.

The Chairperson also touched on tertiary institutions placed under administration. “Institutions that are currently under administration probably have something to do with their quality of management. This has necessitated government’s intervention to ensure that administrators that do not appreciate accountability dynamics of the institutions are removed and accountable people are appointed to ensure corporate governance and better management in the institutions,” says Malale.
