Higher Education and Training launches Richmond-Indaleni Community Skills Centre

Skills centre takes off the ground

The newly launched Richmond-Indaleni Community Skills Centre opens its doors to 310 learners for 2015/16 academic year.

Recruitment process is set to begin in the first week of September targeting young people between ages of 18 to 35, in the Richmond, KwaZulu-Natal.

The Centre has partnered with Eddels Shoes – which is one of the largest footwear manufactures in the region in order to achieve the much needed skills that will boost economic growth of the area and assist in creating jobs.

Deputy Principal of Academic Services at Umgungundlovu Technical and Vocational Educational Education and Training (TVET), college Dumile Msomi, said: “While the construction is still well underway, the mobile classrooms will be utilised for training until the completion of the Community Skills Centre early in 2016.”

Msomi says the Centre will in future have learning facilities such as two Workshops, Library, Computer class, Theory classes, one Incubator room, and added that skills programmes that will soon be offered in few weeks to come are Garment Making and Footwear: hand lacing and Closing, among others.

“The launch of the Richmond-Indaleni Community Skills Centre represents an important step in our government’s commitment to supporting communities to build their economies and thereby to start to tackle the challenge of unemployment,” the Minister of Higher Education and Training Dr Blade Nzimande said.
