Although road fatalities in the North West were reduced by 43.47 percent, translating into reduction of four crashes and 10 deaths during the Easter long weekend compared to last year, provincial MEC for Public Safety Howard Yawa on Friday said that much more needs to be done to reduce accidents involving pedestrians. Thirteen fatalities were recorded across public roads in the province.
According to MEC Yawa, eight pedestrians, three drivers and two passengers, lost their lives in road accidents across the province during the period.
Although rainy weather adversely affected traffic law enforcement operations and in particular speed operations, 4 150 tickets were issued during the long weekend for speed violations.
Bojanala Platinum district recorded the highest crashes, i.e. four, followed by Dr Kenneth Kaunda and Ngaka Modiri Molema districts which each recorded three fatalities while Dr Segomotsi Mompati district recorded two crashes.
