Helping hand towards supplementary exams

Gauteng Department of Education is offering free preparatory classes to all matriculants who will be writing their supplementary examination for mathematics and physical science in February and March 2010.

The Minister of Basic Education has called on learners to register to rewrite the supplementary exams. The Gauteng Department of Education is fully committed to ensure that as many learners as possible are able to take advantage of the opportunity to write supplementary exams.

Given the importance of maths and science, the Gauteng Department of Education particularly wants to do what it can to assist learners. The programme tries to optimise the opportunities for drill and practice in maths and science exam questions. Registered learners will attend four weekend sessions to participate in a daily programme structured as follows:

* Session one

How to manage the examinations: presenting teachers will show learners how to deal with different kinds of exam questions, how to manage time, etc. using sample questions. The session lasts one hour.

* Session two

Mock examination: learners will be given a two hours long mock exam

* Session three

Review: a teacher will work through the mock exam and learners will mark their own scripts. This will take one hour.

Centres for these mock exams will be in Soshanguve, Mamelodi, Atteridgeville, Hammanskraal, Winterveldt, Mabopane (all in Tshwane) Thembisa, Vosloorus, Katlehong, Thikoza, Etwatwa, Daveyton, Tsakane, Midrand, Soweto, Alexandra, Krugersdorp, Merafong, Sebokeng, Evaton, Sharpeville and Ratanda.

Furthermore, the Sci-Bono Discovery Centre has set up a facility where learners can study for the maths and physical science everyday with learning area teams at hand for assistance.
