The Deputy Minister of Health Dr Gwen Ramokgopa, and also in her capacity as the present Deputy Chairperson of Gauteng ANC Provincial Executive Committee will tomorrow, 13 December 2013 attend the funeral of the former boxing hero.
Jacob ‘Baby Jake’ Matlala was a prominent sports hero who advocated for a good health for communities. He participated in the Departmental campaigns during Dr Ramokgopa’s tenure as Gauteng MEC for Health in Gauteng.
Of note, he always supported and participated in the “Sports Hero’s Walk against HIV and AIDS” that was initiated in Gauteng and expanded nationwide. The Ministry of Health pays tribute in honour of Matlala’s enduring hard work and role played in the health awareness campaigns and also wishes his legacy will be emulated by other South Africans.
‘We have learnt with sadness of the passing away of world class hero and a dedicated health advocate who inspired many communities, especially the youth. We therefore extend our heartfelt condolences and gratitude to the Matlala family and the entire boxing fraternity during this time of bereavement. We cherish his memories, and may his soul rest in eternal peace,’ said Dr Ramokgopa.
Matlala was an exceptional sportsman and dedicated his contributions to community development and advocacy for health and HIV and AIDS.
