HAWKS nets suspects for multi-million rand fraud

Last week Warrant Officer Mashudu Mashaba of the South African Police Service (SAPS) Directorate for Priority Crimes Investigation (HAWKS) arrested 45 year old Abdool Gani Anver Kalla in connection with fraud and theft amounting to approximately R7.5 million.

Kalla allegedly sold electricity vouchers on behalf of the Thaba Chewu Municipality to the community of Mashishing in Mpumalanga. The accused was supposed to have deposited the money into the municipality account but did not.

Three cases comprising of fraud and theft were opened in May this year and within just months, Warrant Officer Mashaba tracked down and arrested Kalla at his house in Polokwane.

The accused appeared in the Lydenburg Magistrates court on charges of fraud and theft on 21 July 2011 and he is expected to reappear in the same court tomorrow, 28 July 2011.
