A correctional official working at the IT section of Boksburg Correctional Centre has been arrested this afternoon by the Hawks following two weeks of a joint investigation conducted with the Department of Correctional Services into allegations of fraud and corruption.
The official, whose name will only be published after appearing in court on Monday, 29 November 2010, is suspected of having facilitated the cleaning of records of a notorious parolee by the name of “Bra Solly” Motsepe from the database of Correctional Services. The plus/minus 72 year old parolee Motsepe was supposed to complete his parolee period only in 2017, and currently has absconded as he cannot be traced. The multi-millionaire drug kingpin, Motsepe, was arrested in the 1990s following the discovery of over R20 million worth of mandrax tablets and drug manufacturing equipment.
Commenting on the successful joint operation of the Hawks and Correctional Services, National Commissioner Tom Moyane said, “we welcome the arrest as a positive step towards ridding our department of corrupt officials who tarnish the name of a majority of officials that are responsible and hard working. We are intensifying our fight against fraud and corruption as directed by Minister Mapisa-Nqakula, and we expect more arrests as the joint operation with the Hawks to root out corruption gains momentum.” The arrested correctional official had also served in the community corrections office of Johannesburg Correctional Centre where offender Motsepe served his sentence.
Currently the Hawks has launched a national wide manhunt looking for Parolee Motsepe who has escaped and has called on anyone with information on this fugitive from justice to contact the investigating officer - Colonel Patrick Mbotho at 082 576 4407.
Commissioner Moyane expressed confidence that with the assistance of the public Mbotho will be re-arrested to serve the remaining years of his parole behind bars for violating his parole condition. “He can run but he cannot hide, we will arrest him and bring him back to custody,” said Commissioner. He appealed to anyone with information on fraud and corruption in Correctional Services to call the department’s anti-corruption hotline – 0800 701 701.
