International Nelson Mandela Day brought light to pupils of Macacuma in Sterkspruit as MEC for Social Development and Special Programmes handed over 30 computers to five schools.
On this day, all South Africans are expected to spend 67 minutes doing something good for the disadvantaged as Mandela spent 67 years for the liberation of the country. Heeding to that call, MEC Majodina, with the contribution of five computers from Eastern Cape Gambling and Betting Board, delivered 30 computers to Mbihli Senior Secondary School (S.S.S) Egugwini Junior Secondary School (J.S.S), Mbolekwa J.S.S, Macacuma Senior Primary School (S.P.S) and Yathela S.S.S, each receiving five, with the latter school being the hosts of the event. A total of 70 school bugs, 25 school uniforms and 32 food parcels were also divided between the disadvantaged pupils from the same schools.
Mandela Day took two days to complete all the “good” that the MEC and her officials had on offer. On Monday, 18 May, MEC and officials from other government departments, including Roads and Public Works, Rural Development and Agrarian Reform and Education, formed part of the team that painted the walls of Nyathela S.S.S hall and cleaned the entire school yard. After all the cleaning MEC and her team proceeded to Ekuphumleni Service Centre for older persons where they cut cake and sang a birthday song for Tata Madiba before sharing the cake between everyone present.
At around 10:00 am on day two, Nyathela school yard was buzzing with school children and community members, rehearsing the traditional dance, coral songs, poets and speeches that were in complement of Mandela’s legacy. One young boy even mimicked Madiba on his speech “never, never and never again shall it be that this beautiful land will again experience the oppression of one by another”, to a big round of applauds from the audience.
Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture donated with two soccer pole nets, ten bibes and soccer and netball balls as part of their contribution to the day’s programme. MEC Majodina gave a purpose of the day before handing over her presents to the identified recipients of her community. MEC Majodina hails from Macacuma. “Mandela Day is an initiative to honour Nelson Mandela in his contribution to democracy through outstanding performance in service delivery. It is day that is set aside to promote service delivery for 67 minutes for those who cannot afford hence the delivery of these computers, food parcels and school uniforms,” she said.
Next will be the handing over of blankets and clothing material to the needy families of Bhisho’s Tyutyu North and Sweetwaters at Sweetwaters Hall on Monday, 25 July 2011.
