On Wednesday, 20 July 2011 in a crime intelligence-driven operation by the police at OR Tambo International Airport, a large amount of drugs was discovered nestled under a passengers wig.
Police received information of a possible drug smuggler on board a flight to South Africa from South America. Various flights from South America were monitored and then when a flight from Brazil landed in the morning, police identified the possible drug smuggler. The suspect, a 36 year old female from Angola, was taken to a search room where she was questioned and had her luggage searched, but nothing was found. Two policewomen then conducted a body search and found the drugs hidden under a wig that she was wearing.
The narcotic substance, which was found in a plastic bag on top of her head and then covered by the wig, was identified as cocaine and had an approximately weight of three kg with a street value of R840 million. The narcotics will now be sent to our Forensic Science Laboratory for further testing. The suspect will be appearing in the Kempton Park Magistrates Court on Friday, 22 July 2011, facing charges of drug trafficking.
