While the world is mourning and in shock from the earthquake that killed thousands in Haiti, we pray for the speedy recovery of the survivors and send our deepest sincere condolences to those who lost their lives.
It appears that things are not that rosy as well here at home. Across the country this summer has been characterised by heavy rains accompanied by storms that have damaged homes and left many homeless and school buildings damaged.
Gauteng Department of Agriculture and Rural Development MEC Nandi Mayathula-Khoza paid an urgent visit to farmers affected by the hail storm in Krugersdorp on last week Friday. The purpose of the visit was to assess the affected areas in order to guide the department on the intervention mechanisms it can put in place.
The most affected farmers that the department has identified include a vegetable farmer, a poultry farmer and a nursery which are affected along the N14 Ventersdorp and R25 Rustenburg roads. A nursery tunnel has collapsed, trees fell on some of the infrastructures, vegetables were extensively damaged, chicken houses and residential houses damaged.
Detailed information on how much damage was caused will be released after the assessment and evaluation of the extent of the damage.
