A 38 year old motorist is to answer to charges of gross overloading when he appears in the Brits Magistrates Court in the North West Province today, Monday 10 October 2011.
Andrew Ndlovu who had been out on R1000 bail was arrested last month by officers from the North West Road Traffic Management Unit after the driving axle of his Toyota bakkie which is allowed 1 670kg weighed was found to be overloaded by 231, 7% as it weighed 5540kg.Its Gross Combination Mass which is allowed 3360kg was found to be overloaded by 6 100kg as it weighed 9 460kg.
Ndlovu was on route from Johannesburg to Botswana when he was pulled over near the Bapong Traffic Control Centre on the Bakwena Platinum Highway. His bakkie was alleged to be unsafe to be on a public road as it practically had no steering. The under mass on its steering was 280,6kg under as it weighed 760kg instead of the permissible 1040, 6kg. Its homebuilt trailer also had no brakes and its tyres were deflating under its heavy load even as the vehicle was being weighed at the weighbridge.
North West MEC for Human Settlements, Public Safety and Liaison, Desbo Mohono says that Provincial Road Traffic Management authorities intensify their focus on load management in order to reduce crashes on public roads during the festive season.
