A councillor in Greater Taung Local Municipality died in a car accident on the Rooiwal-Taung Station crossroad near Taung Tusk Hotel on Wednesday afternoon.
The Opel Astra sedan in which the councillor was a passenger crashed into a hearse which was turning to the right at the crossroad as it was overtaking. After hitting the hearse on its right front fender and bumper, the driver lost control of the vehicle, which proceeded and hit a signpost pole which caused fatal injuries to the councillor.
It is alleged that the councillor was rushing to another accident scene in which one of her relatives was involved about 18 kilometres from Taung between Magogong and Hartswater.
The driver of the vehicle and a passenger were treated by paramedics for minor injuries and rushed to Taung Provincial Hospital. The driver of the hearse was not injured.
Meanwhile, North West MEC for Public Safety, Howard Yawa wishes to convey his condolences to the family of the councillor, the Greater Taung Local Municipality and the community that the councillor served.
According to the analysis of the most fatal road accidents presented by MEC Yawa at Arrive Alive Festive Campaign-When Duty Calls Operations closing parade held last Friday, speed was the highest contributory factor towards the death toll in the province.
