Government is outraged by Bredasdorp gang-rape and murder

Government is outraged and dismayed at yet another media report of gang rape and murder of a Western Cape teenager. The frequent occurrence of these brutal acts is unacceptable and will not be tolerated.

According to media reports a 17-year old teenager in Bredasdorp, Cape Town was gang-raped, mutilated and her body was dumped in a construction site where she was found by a security guard. She later died in Tygerberg Hospital after she identified one of her alleged attackers.

“It is worrying that rape and abuse seems to have become a norm. This will not be allowed to continue. Society needs to change their mindset about the dignity to life and respect for each other,” said GCIS Acting CEO, Phumla Williams.

The Criminal Justice System will continue with its fight against crime including abuse but it is time that all members of the society including NGOs, business community, and Traditional Leaders come together to rid the nation of what is now a scourge.

“This has to stop. We are confident that our law-enforcement agencies will ensure that all perpetrators are put behind bars. They must face the full wrath of the law. Those who molest and abuse children have no place in a democratic South Africa,” Williams said.
