Government Motor Transport launches fleet management system

Government Motor Transport (GMT) launched an integrated fleet management system, which will increase productivity and accountability, better management control and a streamlined operation on the roads of the Western Cape.

Nedbank, AFS Group and GMT implemented the integration of three independent systems, which is the first of its kind in the transport industry and the first to be launched on the African continent. The system is an electronic technical solution, which offers a card and paper free solution.

The fleet management system enables management control over the utilisation of state-owned vehicles. Also in the pipeline, is a new refuelling control system for fleet managed vehicles that will allow any organisation operating a fleet to save money.

"Fuel cards posed a challenge for GMT as fraudulent transactions crept in" Johan Koegelenberg, Senior Manager of GMT stated. "To minimise fraud we had to find a solution for the amount of fuel cads in the fleet" Real-time electronic systems enables fleet operators to review transactions as they take place, make decisions and implement these decisions immediately. Now operators can view transactions as they take place and there is online communication with the Service Station.

According to David Froman CEO of AFS the system allows for them to stop a vehicle from refuelling and in a five-minute notice they can enable the car to refuel again. "We now have absolute control over the refuelling process, this is world first" Froman stated.

Miss Beryl Kerr delivered the keynote address on behalf of Minister Marius Fransman at the event, and thanked AFS and Nedbank for the system as it will reduce state expenditure.

The system would never have been possible without the vision, foresight and absolute commitment from GMT, AFS and Nedbank. "We have taken a good fleet management system and made it into an exceptional fleet management solution with GMT and AFS" said Alistair Pearce, Divisional Director, Nedbank corporate Banking. Plans are in place to roll out the system to other organs of state not only on a provincial level but also on a local level.
