Government has not given civil servants time off during the FIFA World Cup

The Presidency was taken aback to read in today’s Sowetan, 27 May 2010, an article “civil servants to get time off to watch cup”, that Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe has committed to give civil servants a three hour leave on the days when Bafana Bafana is playing, during the FIFA World Cup.

The Presidency wants to place it on record that Deputy President Motlanthe has never made such an undertaking, nor was such an issue ever discussed with him.

The Department of Public Service and Administration (DPSA) which deals with, amongst other things, policies on employee absenteeism and leave, has issued a circular called ‘2010 World Cup Soccer Guidelines on the Management of Working time, Leave of Absence and Remunerative work outside Public Service Employment’.

At any rate, such matters are not within the purview of The Presidency, as they are covered by the DPSA which regulates labour relations within the public service.
