Government is committed to fight all forms of crime and will always seek to improve its crime fighting measures and safety and security service delivery. It is for this reason that government is hosting a crime summit on service delivery improvement to enable community representatives and stakeholders to express their views on the efforts that are made in the fight against crime.
The crime summit is premised on the intensification and expansion of work that government is already undertaking with various sectors of society, business and communities to prevent and combat crime, as encouraged in the National Crime Prevention Strategy. This strategy requires the mobilisation of broader responsibility and a more proactive approach on crime prevention.
There are several partnership initiatives directed towards the fight against crime, for example Anti crime campaign designed to support and promote the mobilisation of all sectors and communities in partnership with government and law enforcement agencies in the fight against crime, the Anti Crime Leadership Forum, Business Against Crime, ACT, Against Crime Together, Take Charge, Bambanani, Primedia Crime Stop, Action for a Safer South Africa, Movement for Good, etc.
The purpose of the summit is to significantly improve government's (specifically the SAPS) service delivery in policing and crime prevention in the short and medium term by achieving the following critical outcomes:
* Short term and medium term plans to address all key areas in line with identified gaps
* Consolidation of existing operational partnership initiatives (structured relationships) with the department
* Exploration of new operational partnership opportunities with identified key role players in the area of safety and security
* A stakeholder communication strategy to ensure structured continuous and consistent engagements with partners and key stakeholders
* Build a measurable accountability system (monitoring and evaluation) between the partners
* Identification of key themes and robust deliberations on those identified themes for improving service delivery flowing from major crime prevention initiatives/research and develop viable solutions/plans
Reviewing safety, security and other strategies and distilling a co-ordinated plan of action to significantly reduce crime in South Africa.
* Evaluating key organisational strategies and the current organisational approach to service delivery that directly impact on service delivery, e.g. resourcing, communication, training, and turnaround.
* The summit is geared towards understanding the current measures that are implemented in the fight against crime and the gaps.
* The summit will determine short term practical measures that are to be implemented immediately to improve service delivery in as far as safety and security is concerned.
* The summit will propose solutions that are to improve service delivery at the level of police stations and find improved ways of community involvement in the fight against crime. Strengthening and positioning the Private/Public Partnerships for delivery of tangible crime reduction initiatives in the short to medium term.
* Effective and efficient service delivery of the Department for Safety and Security, in the arena of policing and crime prevention, is significantly predicated on effective partnerships with a wide range of stakeholders and role players.
* This crime summit will address policing in South Africa and the associated partnerships opportunities and required actions in through effective partnerships that are reliant on known and agreed priorities, coordinated action and common accountability.
* Improved service delivery through effective partnerships is built on a foundation of trust and mutual respect, whereby the nature and extent of service delivery challenges and opportunities are shared and understood, and dealt with through carefully designed interventions and partnerships.
