Government applauds the South African National Defence Force (SANDF), communities and disaster management teams for their outstanding rescue operations during the recent floods in Limpopo and Mpumalanga provinces.
A total of 226 people were rescued in a 44-hour non-stop operation in the two provinces. SANDF and disaster management committees of the affected provinces continue to urge members of the communities to be cautious, and not dwell near river banks and low-lying areas.
Acting GCIS CEO, Phumla Williams, said, “We take our hats off to the SANDF, the public and provincial disaster management committees for the job well done. These heroes and heroines have gone beyond their call of duty to ensure that the rescue operations are a success.”
“Government conveys its heartfelt condolences to those who have lost their loved ones during the floods. We also empathise with those that have lost their properties and belongings during this time,” said Williams.
Communities are urged to be vigilant of warnings around changing weather patterns.
Government will intensify its efforts to find those that are reported to be still missing, and provide continuous assistance to those affected.
