Government will closely monitor tomorrow's planned marches by the Congress of South African Trade Union (Cosatu) and members of the public against e-tolling as part of the Gauteng Freeway Improvement Project (GFIP).
Cosatu has obtained permission to stage marches in Johannesburg and Pretoria tomorrow, Friday, November 30. However, this does not change the fact that government has consulted and shared information on the GFIP project over a number of years and called for public comment.
Government calls on marchers to exercise their right to protest within the ambit of the law. Legal permission comes with an expectation of legal conduct and government therefore hopes that marchers will not infringe on the rights of others, damage property or cause fundamental harm to the country’s reputation.
The law will take its course against anyone who violates the law.
