“As we are about to celebrate Christmas there are many children who will not have that opportunity. Either because they come from poor families or they are from orphanages and places of safety. We are here today to celebrate with these kids,” said Gauteng Health and Social Development MEC, Qedani Mahlangu yesterday.
The MEC made the statement on her visit to Tembisa where hundreds of kids from orphanages and places of safety gathered on Thursday, 17 December. Due to the prevalence of deprived, abused and neglected children in communities across Gauteng, the department decided to have a Christmas party to show these children love during the festive season.
MEC Mahlangu said:
“This Christmas party is being held in honour of children who do not have a loving family to spend the festive season with. The day was set also as a plea to communities around Gauteng to take care for children who are in need.”
MEC Mahlangu handed over food parcels to orphanages, some of whom do not get any funding from her department. In keeping with the spirit of giving, the children also received gifts from various sponsors such as hospitality company, African Bay.
“These gifts are a sign that government cares for you too, and government wants you to grow up to be young people who are responsible, who do not do drugs. You are the MECs and Premiers of tomorrow,” she said.
The MEC encouraged them to study hard and stay in school and also to listen to their parents and care givers. She said the government appreciated the work done by all the caregivers who looked after the children and added that although government may not be in a position to demonstrate that they care every day. It is days like these that were an expression of that care.
The children enthusiastically danced their hearts out when they took to the stage and sang Christmas songs. They also had jumping castles, face painting and music to keep them entertained.
