Government agrees to request for an extension in public service wage negotiations

Government has agreed to the request by labour for an extension in the period of consultation on the wage settlement offer. The move will provide an opportunity for outstanding signatories to the offer to consolidate their position on the settlement offer.  This comes after the expiry of the 21 day period for labour to sign the offer following the signing of the offer by government. The extended period for consultation lapses by the end of next week.

On the positive development by Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) affiliated unions with the exception of one to sign the offer, Minister for the Public Service and Administration Mr Richard Baloyi further reiterated that this round of negotiations called for a meeting of the minds and that the continued commitment and efforts by the employer were beginning to bear fruit.

Minister Baloyi remains optimistic that majority of the unions will sign the settlement offer for implementation.
