International Relations and Cooperation Minister Maite Nkoana-Mashabane has arrived in Maputo, Republic of Mozambique, where she is leading the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Election Observer Mission (SEOM) to Mozambique on behalf of President Jacob Zuma, Chairperson of the SADC Organ on Politics, Defence and Security Cooperation.
The mandate of the SEOM in the Republic of Mozambique is to assess compliance with the provisions of the SADC Principles and Guidelines Governing Democratic Elections and the electoral laws of the Republic of Mozambique.
SADC Electoral Observer Missions are undertaken in three phases: i.e. pre-election period, election-day and post-election.
The SEOM in Mozambique is comprised of approximately 142 personnel from the following SADC Member States: Angola; Botswana; Lesotho; Malawi; Mozambique; Namibia; South Africa; Tanzania; Zambia and Zimbabwe. The Observers are deployed in all the Provinces of the Republic of Mozambique.
Following the elections, the SADC Electoral Observation Mission will, as practice, issue a preliminary statement on 17 October 2014.
