Electoral Commission takes democracy to school learners

The Electoral Commission of South Africa in partnership with the Department of Basic Education invites members of the media to the National Launch of Schools Democracy Programme (SDP) taking place at North West Province. Keynote speakers are IEC Commissioner Judge Dhaya Pillay and Minister of Basic Education Mrs Angie Motshekga, MP.

This partnership is aimed at encouraging and educating learners to participate in civic and democracy education as well as voter registration. The Platinum Village Secondary School in the North West Province is one of the schools nominated to participate in the 2023 Schools Democracy Programme (SDP).

Details of the Launch are as follows:

Date: Thursday, 13 April 2023
Time: 10h00 to 13h30
Venue: Platinum Village Secondary School, Rustenburg, North West Province

Activities of the day include ‘mock elections’ where learners will take part in demonstrating how elections are conducted. Learners will simulate role of election officials. Those who are 16 years or older and have a valid South African identity document will be afforded an opportunity to register as voters.
