The Prophet of Islam (Peace be upon him) was born on the Islamic date of the 12th of Rabi-ul-Awwal which in the Islamic calendar is today.
Within a period of twenty three years he changed the Arabian society and brought about reforms that have had a profound impact on humanity as a whole. His traditions have a universal value and if correctly implemented can greatly reduce the suffering of many people around the world.
One such example is a narration in which he says: "None of you is a genuine believer until he loves for his brother what he loves for himself." If, within the context of our society, this narration can be implemented and acted upon, we can undoubtedly establish a more caring society.
Today, the almost two billion followers of this great Prophet (Peace be upon him), including those who live in South Africa will be commemorating this day, and I take this opportunity to wish them all well and may the day be a blessed one.
Like the followers of all other religions in this country, Muslims too have made a positive contribution, and there is space for that to continue.
