MEC for Human Settlements in the North West, Desbo Mohono, has urged staff in her department to enrol for Adult Basic Education and Training (ABET) in order to improve their own lives and to become productive at work.
Mohono, said acquiring basic literacy skills will empower all employees to become even more productive. “Enhancing their skill and knowledge will help our employees to take control over their own lives. Education is a pathway to a better life.”
Through this training programme, more and more employees of the department will know how to read, write and count. This will further assist in eradicating illiteracy in the country as one of the nine priorities of the national education strategy. According to the current research conducted, there are an estimated 3.3 million illiterate adults in South Africa.
The enrolment of Human Settlements employees on the ABET programme is consistent with the provision of the South African Constitution which affirms the rights of all citizens to basic education, including Adult Basic Education and Training.
ABET is available to all adults who want to complete their basic education or want to acquire knowledge in basic reading and writing. It further aims to provide basic learning tools, knowledge and skills.
Interested employees would then be assessed to ensure that they are correctly placed according to their level of understanding as they will be provided with the nationally recognised qualification at the end of the syllabus.
