Gauteng Department of Health and Social Department MEC Ntombi Mekgwe urges communities to give a gift of blood and save a life this festive season. This blood is vitally needed by hospitals especially during the holidays as the number of people in need of surgery or blood transfusion increases due to road accidents amongst other reasons.
To support South African National Blood Service (SANBS) in their attempts to collect blood, the department is transporting staff members to malls where blood donation is taking place. Tomorrow, Wednesday, 22 December 2010, SANBS will be at Alberton City Mall and on Thursday, 30 December 2010, they will be at Southgate Mall between 08h00 and 17h00. One can also donate blood at the nearest SANBS.
For more information and more places to donate blood during this festive season, please call: 080 011 9031 or 011 761 9000.
MEC Mekgwe also encourages parents to be more vigilant with their children during this busy time. “We need to be more careful with our children since many incidents of children who drown, suffer from burn injuries mostly caused by fireworks or get lost increase. I encourage parents to have a watchful eye over their children so they can be safe to return back to school next year,” she said.
