The Local Government SETA (LGSETA) must get its house in order in terms of its financial book keeping by the end of this financial year.
This was the message from the Portfolio Committee on Higher Education and Training to the board members of LGSETA earlier today. This follows the admission by the board that the institution is not in good condition when it comes to its management of financial resources and adherence to laws that regulate its state affairs.
The Committee said if LGSETA failed to come right, it (Committee) would recommend to the Minister of Higher Education and Training to appoint an administrator to oversee the business organisation.
The Committee learnt that LGSETA has received a disclaimer after three years of good performance, and this has raised the ire of the Committee. The Committee Chairperson, Adv Ishmael Malale, advised the board and management to approach the Auditor-General for help in a bid to fix the organisation’s financial systems and controls.
“The Committee is extremely intolerant of lack of accountability and will never speak softly when confronted by disclaimer. You must take actions against those who dragged the institution into this state of collapse,” said Adv Malale.
Last year, the Office of the Auditor-General reported that the Department of Higher Education and Training had received an unqualified audit, and that more than 20 out of the 27 SETAS had obtained unqualified audits.
