The Commission for Gender Equality (CGE) welcomes the judgement handed down by Judge Peet Johnson to Karabo Mokoena’s killer Sandile Mantsoe at the South Gauteng High Court today. As human rights based organisation established to help strengthen and deepen democracy in the country, the Commission is of the view that the rule of law should be respected
“The killing of Karabo Mokoena has brought back the spotlight on Intimate Partner Killings. These are the issues that top the Commission for Gender Equality agenda and therefore it is the view of the CGE that this scourge should be eradicated completely in South Africa”, said Ms. Lulama Nare, the Chairperson of the Commission for Gender Equality.
The Commission is aware of the laudable policies, procedures and legislative frameworks put in place by the Department of Justice and Correctional Services to ensure an effective administration of justice. The Commission hopes that this case sets a precedent in terms of consistency and swiftness in prosecuting gender based violence cases.
In addition, the Commission respects the judgement handed down by Judge Johnson taking into cognisance that Sandile Mantsoe was found guilty on the three accounts that he was charged with: that is murder, assault and defeating the ends of justice.
We hope that this will assist persuade partners to learn alternative ways of resolving intimate partner conflicts without resorting to violence. We call upon all structures to work together in eradication of gender based violence in South Africa.
