CGE welcomes FPB ruling on Ulwaluko website
The Commission for Gender Equality (CGE) welcomes the Appeal Tribunal of the Film and Publication Board’s (FPB) ruling reaffirming their decision that the website www.ulwaluko.co.za will have a restrictive age classification of 13N.
The CGE supports the continuation of the relevant website with the conditions imposed by the FPB. The website is aimed at informing the public on issues pertaining to circumcision and the atrocities that are associated with incorrectly performed circumcision practices. Moreover, the site also recommends ways to reduce the harm that may arise through improper procedures during the circumcision process.
Young initiates who undergo circumcision at initiation schools which do not adhere to the strict criteria of the traditional practice, have lost their lives and in some instances sustain physical mutilation of their genitalia.
The CGE recognises the fact that cultural and traditional practices are entrenched as a Constitutional right. However, when such practices are incorrectly performed, this violates the rights of the individuals concerned and steps must be taken to address such infringements.”
“The CGE calls upon South African to accept that the escalation of death during the initiation have reached alarming proportions and therefore any positive effort to save lives and to educate should be embraced and embraced”, said Mr Mfanozelwe Shozi, the Chairperson of the Commission for Gender Equality.
