Gender Equality on celebration of Human Rights Day

The 21st of March is the day that we commemorate Human Rights Day in various ways. This year’s edition of the commemoration coincides with 20 year celebrations of our democracy and it is therefore fitting that we reflect on the 20 year period, with particular reference to outcomes of what we as CGE (Commission for Gender Equality) and other Chapter 9 Institutions had laboured in that time period.

The advent of democracy bestowed on each South African, fundamental rights that are encapsulated in the Constitution of South Africa and these cut across a wide spectrum and encourage “equality” along the lines of gender, sexual orientation, culture and religion amongst others.

Whilst, there are some notable gains from our efforts as CGE, advancing the directive of the chapter 9 of the Constitution of South Africa, a lot more needs to be achieved in an effort to further build on the current achievements for the purpose seeing a South African society that is free from all forms inequalities including gender inequality.

The day when all South Africans are able to appreciate the fact that LGBTI (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgendered and Intersexed) community, and those who are vulnerable are indeed protected by law, it is only then that we would have surmounted the current challenges that we are faced with as a society.

The CGE together with its sister organisations (Chapter 9 Institutions) will continue to drive the ideology that promotes and drives the notion of equality in the context of fundamental rights.

The CGE encourages the public to utilize the toll free number (0800 007 709) to report any matter that relates to violations of gender rights.
