It is with great sadness that the Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) announces the untimely passing this morning of Dr Prem Govender, the director for exams and assessment. He died of heart failure after being rushed to hospital from home.
Dr Govender has worked in the old House of Delegates education system as a teacher and subject advisor for economics and management sciences. He was one of the key core personnel who were brought in to establish the new Gauteng Department of Education in 1996.
His career in education spans nearly 40 years and was last month awarded a PhD degree in assessments at the University of Johannesburg.
At the GDE he worked in the exams and assessment directorate until he later led the unit. He managed and ran the Gauteng examination system and developed a world class examination department. He twice won the Gauteng Premier’s Service Excellence Award for his management of exams.
His sterling management of examinations in Gauteng will be a legacy that he leaves behind.
The matric examinations, systems and controls he put in place will continue and the GDE is confident that there is sufficient depth and capacity to ensure that the exams continue to run smoothly. The deputy director general in charge of the exams unit will take over the running of the grade 12 exams.
May his soul rest in peace.
