Gautrain ready for the World Cup

In a bid to improve mobility of fans and tourists between Sandton in Johannesburg and OR Tambo International Airport, the Bombela Concession Company has taken an initiative to commission a modified scope completion of Phase 1 to be ready in time for the 2010 soccer World Cup spectacle. The proposal was subject to approval by the Gauteng Provincial Government.

The modified scope completion of Phase 1 takes into account the exceptional performance of Bombela infrastructure, systems and operations subcontractors in lessening delays that took place through land acquisition and numerous project variation instructions amongst others.

The Gauteng Provincial Government announced that funding constraints prevented consideration of the original Bombela acceleration proposal which offered full scope completion of Phase 1.

With the province of Gauteng hosting the opening ceremony and the final of the 2010 football tournament, the Gautrain will play a significant role in enabling easy, safe and reliable movement of fans between the various venues, park and rides, public viewing areas and places of accommodation.

Bombela Consortium is a partnership between Murray & Roberts and Strategic Partners Group from South Africa, Bombardier of Canada and Bouygues of France. Each partner has different levels of participation in various aspects of the project.
